A Blessed Vacation

By John W. Kennedy | October 22, 2008

My wife and I took a 10-day trip this month, passing through 10 Northeast states, most of which I had never visited before.

What a great way to learn about the country. It’s remarkable that dialects are so different in southeastern Pennsylvania, urban New York, Boston and Maine — all within a relatively small geographic area.

john-fall-2.jpgWe had a fabulous time seeing old coal trains in Steamtown in Scranton Pa., visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., walking the Freedom Trail in Boston, eating lobster on the Atlantic Coast in Maine, touring the mansions of the 19th century aristocrats in Newport, R.I., witnessing the brilliant leaves changing color in New Hampshire and treading on hallowed ground in Gettysburg.

Unlike Springfield, Mo., where I live, I gladly couldn’t find a restaurant anywhere on our trek that allowed smoking. We also had the blessing of going on vacation after gas prices had fallen a dollar a gallon from their peak. And perhaps best of all, we spent an entire 10 days away from television, avoiding depressing economic news and pre-election analysts.
