If Dogs Vote, McCain Wins
By John W. Kennedy | August 18, 2008
I understand opinion polls that ask voters which presidential candidate they prefer based on such factors as religiosity. For instance, a June Gallup poll indicated that John McCain would defeat Barack Obama 57-32 percent among white voters who say religion is an important part of their daily lives. The poll is relevant because spirituality is a decisive factor guiding many people in voting.
But I think survey taking has gone a bit overboard lately. In an essay last week, Time writer Nancy Gibbs reported that pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 to 37 percent. Obama holds a 14-point advantage among those who don’t own pets—but most Americans have an animal around the house.
Zogby International has conducted a poll based on shopping preferences. Wal-Mart voters give McCain a 14-point edge while Costco voters return the favor for Obama. Sears consumers likewise provide a 14-point lead to McCain while Target purchasers choose Obama by 24 points.
None of this matters much, however. The only votes that count come Nov. 4 will be those cast in the ballot box.

Humph.

MY dog is an “Independent.”
But no one cares about the canine vote. Ohh nooo.
And, I must observe, no one has polled squirrels, either.
And we all know how they tend to gather nuts.
This election could be a feast for them.
