What’s the Rush?

By John W. Kennedy | February 14, 2008

ballot.jpgMedia outlets, particularly television and magazines, spent much of 2007 touting various presidential candidates. The pack journalism mentality even picked a front-runner for the Republicans, a candidate who managed to go nowhere once the votes started being counted.

Now, more than eight months from the general election, the major networks are in a hurry for it all to be over. What’s the big rush? This volatile political process is fun to watch.

The impatience of the TV networks is especially noticeable with Mike Huckabee. On Super Tuesday, the former Arkansas governor sat down for an interview on CNN just after making a rousing speech to supporters about his five-state win across the South.

“It’s highly unlikely that you are going to get the nomination,” the CNN reporter said in an opening salvo. “You certainly knew that coming in.”

Huckabee graciously and articulately noted that he had never been a frontrunner in his political career. He pointed out that John McCain still needed 500 delegates to secure the nomination.

“So why stay in the race?” the reporter asked, oblivious to the reply Huckabee just made.

The quick-thinking Huckabee gave the analogy that two days earlier none of the pundits gave the underdog New York Giants a shot at winning the Super Bowl either.

The day likely is coming when Huckabee will concede the nomination to McCain. But he is a believer that — at least until this year’s Super Bowl — you don’t walk off the field until time has expired.

Huckabee’s perseverance and optimism should offer comfort for Christians facing challenges. We should never give up on a marriage, poor health or dire financial circumstances unless and until every possible avenue to restoration has been exhausted.

My thoughts exactly. Huckabee was useful to the media narrative but now gets in the way. It has been instructive to watch their impatience with him. I was in DC these past few days and had conversations with media anchors behind the scenes. They were questioning Huckabee’s sanity.

I think everyone’s impatient to get to the general election.
