Time to jump into the blogging fray

By John W. Kennedy | February 7, 2008

mouse_web.jpgA wee bit late I’ve joined the 21st century and entered the blogosphere.

Why have I united with the cause? Times demand it. Young people read blogs more than they read traditional media (i.e. magazines and newspapers). If I ignore blogging, odds are I’ll be sadly out of touch a couple of years down the road.

I learned that in the newspaper business. I started out writing headlines on a manual typewriter a quarter century ago. I had to adapt to the computer age. A daily paper I worked for in Sacramento didn’t keep up with the times and went out of business.

I’m all for technology if it makes sense and I understand it. I ditched my home phone years ago and went solely with the cell model before it got trendy. I don’t have a BlackBerry or an iPod, but I’m not going to criticize those who do if it improves their life.

Still, it’s a little beyond me why so many people — my sons included — would rather read the rantings and ravings of untrained observers typing at a laptop in a living room rather than a professional journalist from an office. My sons have MySpace accounts because that’s how they communicate. I’d better accept it.

The title of the blog site reflects the reality that I’m on the cusp of turning 50. Plus nearly everybody else doing a blog at the magazine is younger than I am. They don’t see life as I do. I’m the only editorial staff member whose children are grown.

Questions remain. Will people beyond my family really want to look at this? Are my entries going to sound more like a rambling diary than a thought-provoking commentary? Stay tuned.

I think blogs are great also!!! It is fun reading an article then reading what the average Joe thinks about it. I also like to read blogs if I am getting ready to start a project, tips from the “been there done that crowd” are great.

John…John…John…in the back of my mind I kept asking myself, should I start blogging? Would anyone really read it? I have justified my lack of action by telling myself I don’t have time. Well now, you have made me feel SO guilty for not “keeping up with the times” that I HAVE to join you. I must give in to peer pressure and unite with the over 40’s who have fought against this battle for way too long. I surrender…I’ll send you my blog once I figure out how!

Pretty neat, John! I’ve perused a bit. I do like the “title” of your blogsite. I’m there, too. (Sigh.) :-)
